Proloquo2Go is a symbol-based communication app that gives a voice to those who have difficulty communicating verbally. It is an important tool for self expression and for increasing communication skills and language development. The app can be personalised by users, parents, teachers and therapists for everything from vocabulary to its appearance. It is designed for a range of fine-motor and visual skills with options including 23 pre-programmed grid sizes. It offers ‘Crescendo’, a complete research-based core word vocabulary with 10 000+ fringe words. This app offers the user a choice of regional vocabulary and accents, it also supports bilingual use and can even switch languages mid-sentence. There is 100 natural-sounding voices to choose from, across all languages, including children’s voices. One of Proloquo2Go’s key features is the consistent placement of objects on screen that support easy recognition, known as motor planning. The thematic templates keep core words in the same place throughout the vocabulary. This helps communicators by reducing time wasted trying to find words. Overtime communication skills can develop, at first a user may communicate using only single words but in time, progress to communicating in full grammatical sentences. The progressive language feature reveals words step by step. This helps communicators learn words and their location as their vocabulary gradually grows. Accessibility settings support scanning Apple’s VoiceOver, for users with fine-motor challenges, as well as vision impairments. E-learning videos and PDF tutorials are available for extra support including resources for the classroom setting. In February 2018 Dutch Text to Speech was also added.
