Ola Mundo means ‘Hello World’ in Portuguese which is apt given they have developed an important communication tool to help families facilitate communication with their non-verbal child. This app helps families communicate remotely with their children who have ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Communication is done through illustrations and multiple-choice questions. A parent can ask a question through a simple 1 click interface. Parents type in the question, choose possible appropriate answers and send. The child can then choose the answer they like best. ‘Socky’ can be customised to adapt to an individualised child’s needs to become any of a child’s favourite characters. Overtime it can measure a child’s progress and help them express their thoughts and feelings, unlocking their true potential. Overtime a child’s communication will develop and relationships will grow. ‘Socky’ is available free on Android and IOS and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. This app needs to be downloaded on two separate devices as it has both a parent and child version. The parent version may be downloaded on an iphone for example and the child’s version on an ipad, which then creates the platform for communication. Further extensions of the app are coming soon, these will have exciting implications for both therapists and teachers, watch this space, we will keep you posted!
